Ritsu Wants a Rival. Mob Sees His Brother.
Spoiler scope: Mob Psycho 100 season 1, especially episodes 7–8. No later-season events or ending spoilers.
Ritsu has plenty going for him at school. He does well, has a place on the student council, and looks like the younger brother who has ordinary life handled. Yet when psychic power enters the picture, I get the sense that all of those things stop counting for him. The thing he lacks beside Mob becomes the thing that matters most.
That makes Dimple's offer in episode 7 especially pointed. Ritsu's abilities have awakened, and Dimple suggests training to surpass his older brother. There it is: a way to turn a new ability into a comparison. Ritsu is exhilarated by his power. I read that excitement as reaching beyond what he can now do to other people. He can imagine occupying a different position beside Mob.
Then Mob arrives in episode 8 and congratulates him.
I like how inconvenient that reaction is for the confrontation Ritsu seems to want. Mob knows his brother has wanted psychic abilities. His response is happiness for him. The person Ritsu is being encouraged to surpass does not behave as though Ritsu's gain threatens his own place.
Ritsu rejects that response. To me, this is where the encounter becomes more painful than a straightforward contest between brothers. If Mob were jealous, Ritsu would at least have an opponent who accepted the terms. They could argue over who had become stronger. Instead, Mob's congratulations leave Ritsu trying to start a contest that his brother has not agreed to enter.
That does not mean one kind reaction can undo Ritsu's feelings. Mob can be pleased for him while failing to meet the need underneath his display of power. I think Ritsu wants the relationship to change along with his abilities: to stop being the brother standing beside someone else's extraordinary gift. Being congratulated can feel insufficient when what you wanted was a different standing altogether.
I do not take that as proof that Mob's affection is false, or that Ritsu is incapable of receiving it. They are giving this moment different meanings. Mob sees something his brother wanted finally happening. Ritsu appears to need it to establish something about himself. That mismatch makes his rejection understandable to me without making it fair to Mob.
When Koyama intervenes and hurts Ritsu, Mob tries to reach his brother. The encounter has become dangerous, but Mob's concern has not turned into a demand that Ritsu take back his rejection first. Ritsu can try to push him away; Mob still sees a younger brother he wants to get to.
The part that stays with me is the congratulations before that danger arrives. Ritsu has gained the very thing that could let him challenge Mob, and Mob is glad for him. The brother he wants to surpass is also someone who can welcome his strength. Ritsu cannot comfortably accept that yet. I want to leave room for how difficult it is, for him, to be loved by the person he has made into his measure.
The series introduction includes the viewing-order guide. For another side of the brothers' comparison, Why Mob Chooses the Body Improvement Club follows the ordinary abilities Mob wants to develop.
Reference notes: the official Ritsu profile establishes his name, school life, and relationship to Mob; only background already established in season 1 is used. The official synopses for episode 7 and episode 8 confirm Dimple's proposal, Ritsu's exhilaration, Mob's congratulations, Ritsu's rejection, and Koyama's intervention. The reading of comparison and recognition is this essay's interpretation. No dialogue is quoted.
